How to Measure the Lug Width of Your Watch
Share
At Beater Strap Co, we know that a great strap can completely transform your watch — but only if it fits just right. That’s where lug width comes in.
If you’re new to swapping watch straps or just want to make sure you get the perfect match, here’s a quick guide on how to measure the lug width of your watch the right way.
What Is Lug Width?
The lug width is the internal distance between the two lugs (those small protrusions on either side of the watch case) where the strap connects to the watch. It’s measured in millimetres (mm) and usually ranges between 18mm to 24mm on most watches.
Getting this measurement right ensures your new strap fits securely and looks seamless on the wrist — no awkward gaps, overhang, or fidgety fit.
Method 1: Check the Watch Specs
The easiest way to find your lug width is to check the manufacturer’s specifications. If you still have the manual or can find the watch model online, look for the lug width listed in millimetres. eg. In google search "Seiko SSC813P lug width" and you should have your answer!
Method 2: Measure It Yourself
Don’t have the specs handy? No stress. Here’s how to measure it yourself:
What You’ll Need:
A digital calliper (for the most accurate measurement), or
A ruler or tape measure (as a quick alternative)
Steps:
Lay your watch flat on a table, face up.
Measure the inside distance between the two lugs, where the spring bar sits.
Take note of the width in millimetres. Most watches will measure out to a whole number like 20mm, 22mm, etc.
Pro tip: If it seems like you’re between two sizes, round down. A 21.7mm measurement is best suited for a 21mm strap.
