Got a 42mm Series 10 or Series 11? Pick the 38/40/41mm adapter, not the 42/44/45mm one. Apple reused the 42mm figure, but the new 42mm case takes the smaller band fitting. Only the older 42mm Series 1 to 3 uses the 42/44/45mm adapter.
